"Shown we can compete with Leeds"

Bristol Academy Women travel to the form team in the country when they take on Leeds Carnegie Ladies on Sunday. With Bristol's game last week against Doncaster postponed Sunday will be Academy's first Premier League game since they traveled to Arsenal back in early December. Leeds coming off winning the League Cup and six Premier League matches without defeat, Bristol will certainly be facing a team pushing to win the title this season, and with Blackburn winning last week Academy now sit bottom of the table with seven games to play. On the trip to Leeds manager Mark Sampson was keen to point out that on both occasions this season Academy have competed well with Leeds and will be looking to do the same again on Sunday.

"We know we face a massive challenge on Sunday but we certainly go to Leeds confident in the knowledge we can cause them problems. On both occasion's against Leeds this season we have been very competitive. At our place, though we were beaten 4-0 we created more chances than our opponents but gifted them goals with individual errors. The abandoned game at Leeds was 1-1 at half time and we felt if the game had continued we were the team pushing to win the game. So we travel Sunday with this in mind and understand what we need to do the get a result.

"Though we have not played a Premier League game for a while we have been able to train and get our key players back to full fitness. The team we take on Sunday is certainly the strongest I have named since I have been at the club so in a number of ways the break has been positive for us."

With only seven games to play Academy know they need to start picking up some points to put some pressure on the teams around them.

"The challenge for us now is to have a right go at finishing outside the bottom two this season. With seven games to go it is now or never for us in terms of picking up some wins, but at this level wins are not easy to come by and no teams give you anything so if you want to win football matches you know you need to show massive desire and commitment and have the quality on the ball to take your opportunities. The longer we spend together as a group the stronger we become both in terms of togetherness and understanding how we want to play. I feel we are now in a position to win football matches at this level."
