Leeds Carnegie 4 Bristol Academy 1

Bristol suffered a 4-0 defeat at Leeds on the weekend but the scoreline certainly flattered the hosts who had to wait until twelve minutes from time to open the scoring then scored two goals in injury time to add insult to injury. Carla Cantrell was again Bristol's chief tormentor scoring two goals to add to the four she scored earlier in the season against Academy.

After a delayed kick off it was Leeds who made the better start maintaining possession for long periods and moving Bristol around the pitch, but the visitors stayed compact and made sure all their hosts were denied any space in behind. Leeds tested keeper Lauren Wells with some crosses and long range shots but the Bristol keeper easily dealt with all their attempts. It was Bristol who created the first clear cut chance when striker Sharla Passariello raced through and hit a shot from just outside the penalty area, but she didn't connect as well as she would have liked and the shot was easily saved by Leeds keeper Carly Telford. Bristol again threatened when an excellent run down the right hand side by Helen Bleazard resulted in a cross that fell to Loren Dykes at the far post but she couldn't quite deflect the ball on target and the resulting scramble was eventually cleared by the home side. Though Bristol were conceded the majority of possession and territory they were a constant threat on the counter attack with Grace McCatty, Helen Bleazard and Sharla Passariello working tirelessly.

The second period followed much the same pattern as the first with Leeds again controlling most of the possession but Bristol looking dangerous on the ocunter attack and from set plays. After 60 minutes the first real opening of the half came when Bristol captain Grace McCatty looked as though she was in behind the Leeds back line, however just as she was about to shoot she was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. Suprisingly the Leeds defender was not red carded for the offence and further to the amazement of the visitors she was not even shown a yellow. From the resulting free kick Katie Daley curled an efffort into the Leeds fall and her follow up shot was again blocked.

With twenty minutes remaining Leeds made a change moving Sue Smith in behind striker Cantrell and this move proved decisive as with only twelve minutes remaining Smith moved into the penalty area, with three Bristol defenders around her there looked no danger and when Smith fell to the ground everyone was expecting a goal kick to be awarded, but the referee had other ideas and awarded a penalty to the shock of both sets of players. With the assistant referee only yards from the incident signalling for a goal kick it was a big call from a referee a long way from the incident. Sue Smith stepped up and smashed the penalty into the top corner to give Leeds the lead. Bristol were cleared upset by the decision and before they could re-group conceded again when Rachel Daly broke free and rifled in a rignt foot shot from just outside the penalty area.

Credit to Bristol they rallied and tried to force their way back into the game. But in injury time Leeds striker Cantrell picked up the ball more than 30 yards from goal turned and executed a fantastic lob over the stranded Bristol keeper Wells. Then minutes later with seconds remaining Sue Smith again broke down the Bristol left, chased by Georgia Wallis there again looked no danger but youngster Wallis pulled up instantly with a hamstring injury which allowed Smith to feed Cantrell to round off the scoring.

Bristol come away from Leeds again wondering what if, after a gutsy performance they deserved far more.
