Filton progressed through to the final of the English Schools Cup with a compehensive 5-1 victory over Farnborough Sixth Form School.
From start to finish Filton showed how far they have progressed this season with a mature performance full of quality. After their win before Christmas over Birmingham the same eleven was named with the hope they could produce a repeat performance and move this young group into the final of the National Cup. Right from the kick off Filton pressed their opponents all over the pitch and created a number of early chances, it was no surprise when winger Gabby Bird cut in from the left flank and after her shot rebounded back off the goalkeeper and crossbar Welsh International Sharla Passariello followed in to tap in the rebound and put Filton a goal up. Soon after a quick throw in from Octavia Saunders found striker Emily Allen who skilfully beat one defender and fired an unstoppble shot into the top corner of the net. However just when it looked as though Filton would pull away from their opponents a rare attack from the home team resulted in a half volley flying past goalkeeper Abby Evans to put the hosts right back in the game. Filton then showed their inexperience the game became scrappy with neither team asserting themselves on their opponent. Crucially Filton scored a third goal prior to the interval, a clever though pass from Paige Stewart allowed Gabby Bird to finish and give the girls from Bristol a comfortable lead going into half time.
In the second half Filton continued to show their growing maturity with all the players taking responsibilty to control the game and make sure they didn't give their opponents a chance of getting back into the game. Filton missed a number of chances to completely finish off the game and it took the arrival of substitute Annie Martin to secure the win, another good pass from Paige Stewart found Martin on the edge of the box, a drop of the shoulder and quick turn allowed Martin to hit a deflected shot into the bottom corner. With Filton's fitness now showing it was left to Emily Allen to round off the scoring with another fine finish.
The result now means Filton can look forward to defending the cup they won last season in a show piece final against either Accrington or Hull College.
Head Coach for Female Football, Mark Sampson was pleased to get through to the Final and with the performance of his team; "Semi final's are about winning but to win with a good performance is even more pleasing. We worked on how we wanted to play in training and the players implemented the strategy fantastically well. This season we have a very, very young team, and to show the maturity and togetherness we showed today is a clear indication of how far the group have come over the last few months. To win a National Title with such a young group of players would be an unbelievable achievement and now we are only one step away I know the players will continue to work hard to give ourselves the best chance possible of becoming Champions"
