Filton College Female Football Academy competed against a St Nich’s side who didn’t give up on giving the Academy girls a good game. The first half was a game of missed chances for Filton who should have scored 7 at the break. Filton’s first chance came just after 3 minutes when Jaz Matthews cross into the box was fumbled by the keeper and Robyn Pinder put the ball past the post. St Nich’s put the pressure on the Filton defence with a few counter attacks but didn’t trouble keeper Abby Evans. The first goal of the afternoon came when a foul on Filton’s hard working Chloe Tape resulted in a Jaz Matthews free kick going in underneath the bar giving Filton the lead after 15 minutes. 10 minutes later a ball over the top by Jenny Gray was cut out by the St Nich’s defence but didn’t stop Jaz Matthews working hard to win it back and take on several players before putting the ball in the back of the net. St Nich’s continued to work hard and didn’t give up on pulling a goal back. 10 minutes before half time poor defending allowed the St Nich’s striker to run through the defence and shoot outside the area giving Abby Evans no chance.

Filton started the second period much brighter after making 3 changes at half time. Filton’s first chance of the second half came when Jaz Matthews through ball found Ocky Saunders who’s first time shot found the top corner, but was to be ruled out for being just offside. Despite the first chance being ruled offside Filton got their 3rd goal of the game minutes after half time with good build play from the back moving forward and Jade Scammell pass to back post found Ocky Saunders score her first goal of the game. 5 minutes later Filton grabbed the 4th goal of the game after a one two with Gabby Bird, Jade Scammell drove into the box and put the ball across the keeper giving her no chance of saving. Filton could have had their 5th goal shortly after but Emily Allen found herself offside from the corner denying her from scoring. Chloe Tape came close to scoring just after when she picked the ball up after a tackle from Annie Martin and ran through on goal and could only see her left foot shot go just past the post. After 60 minutes Gabby Bird came close to scoring after hitting a shot just inside the penalty area only for the bar to deny her a well deserved goal.

Chances were coming quick and fast for Filton after a cross from Kirsten Rendall was dropped by the Keeper and Emily Allen got to the ball quickly but was again denied by the St Nich’s keeper making a good recovery save. Filton’s 5th goal of the afternoon came when a through ball from Ocky Saunders found the feet of Gabby Bird out wide delivered a great ball to the edge of the area to find Emily Allen who brought the ball down and found the top corner to score her first goal. Ocky Saunders found herself with another assist after a ball over the top of the St Nich’s defence found Annie Martin with the keeper advancing and put the ball over the top into the goal. A minute later Jaz Matthews completed her hat trick with a shot outside the area into the bottom corner to make it 7 – 1. Filton continued to dominate the second half after scoring 3 goals in 3 minutes when Annie Martin worked hard to win the ball back down the line and cross into the box found Ocky Saunders to score her 2nd of the game. St Nich’s continued to work hard and make it difficult for Filton for the next 10 minutes but better organisation and decision making allowed Filton 2 minutes from time to score the 9th goal of the game after Emily Allen’s shot outside the area found the back of the net.

Filton Coach Steve Grinham was pleased with the second half performance after a disappointing first half; “In the first half we was poor in terms of our decision making and the tempo in which we were playing. We were making poor passes which allowed them chances in on goal. In the second half it was pleasing to see what we talked about at half time came off with a much better tempo to the game and keeping control of the game. We can be pleased with our passing stats as we have an improvement from the Gloucester game and it dictated our build up play today. Our fitness levels were a key in today’s performance as it gives us an indication to where we are before we start our season next weekend.”

Filton continue their preparations for the league campaign this week their last pre season friendly on Tuesday against JMA Reading at Filton’s WISE Campus kicking off at 2PM.

Filton's Female Football Academy continued their pre season preparations with a home match against local side Gloucester City Ladies. Playing against a very strong wind Filton started the game well controlling possession and defending solidly. Though the strong wind began to make life very difficult for the young Academy defenders, centre backs Georgia Wallis and Ellie Isaac were excellent in heading away long passes from their opponent goalkeeper and defenders. After 22 minutes against the run of play Filton fell behind when a clearance from the Gloucester keeper was headed behind by Filton Captain Georgia Wallis, from the resulting corner the Gloucester centre back got free of her marker Ellie Curson and headed past keeper Ivette Churchill. The Academy girls reacted well and continued with their patient build up play, soon wingers Jaz Matthews and Emily Allen were linking well with strikers Ellie Curson and Annie Martin which meant Filton were creating some good opportunities. Then from an Octavia Saunders cross Annie Martin cleverly flicked a shot past the keeper only for the ball to be cleared off the line. Young Ellie Curson continued her good run of form and tested the keeper with two left footed shots.

Filton made nine changes at the half time interval with only Daisy Allen and Ellie Curson remaining from the first half line up. Filton began the second period as they began the first controlling possession and their pace always looking a threat in the attacking third. It took only four minutes for Gabby Bird to level the scores in bizarre circumstances, after charging down a keeper clearance she saw the ball deflect off her knee and roll into the empty net. Minutes later after an excellent pass from Hannah Churchill Bird was put through on goal but a weak finish meant an easy save for the Gloucester keeper. With centre back partnership Molly Furnival-Doran and Jenny Gray looking as solid as the first half pairing the Filton girls pushed forward. Charlotte Jones continuously drove forward from midfield and chances came and went for Jones, Bird, Curson and winger Robyn Pinder. But come the final whistle Filton hadn't managed to produce the quality final touch needed to score the vital goal.

Filton coach Steve Grinham felt even though the team didn't pick up the win they wanted the performance of the team was an improvement from the Swansea game; "We were a little disappointed with some aspects of our performance against Swansea so it was pleasing to see the girls put into action what we had talked about and worked on in training since the Swansea game. We wanted to be more patient and move the ball better and we did that tonight, we know a good passing performance for us means 300 successful passes and today we were well over the 200 mark so at this stage of the pre season we can be pleased with that, particularly as it is a big improvement from the Plymouth and Swansea stats."

Another positive step for a young Academy team who now continue their preparations for the season with a trip to St Nicks on Sunday.

Missing centre back Georgia Wallis and goalkeeper Abbey Evans from last weeks defeat to Plymouth Filton welcomed back a number of girls for their first taste of competitive match football this season. Swansea started the game the better and took the lead inside the first two minutes when a clever pass found the gap between centre back Chloe Tape and full back Jade Scammell for the Swansea striker to finish neatly past Filton's Welsh U19 keeper Yvette Churchill. With Filton struggling to retain possession and lone striker Annie Martin isolated the visitors pressed but good work from the back four and midfield players Hannah Churchill and Daisy Allen made sure the visitors were restricted to no more shots on target. After half an hour Filton made three changes, Jenny Gray replaced Charlotte Jones, Gina Camfield replaced Jade Scammell and Fitlon's other Welsh U19 International Hannah Daley replaced Gabby Bird. Instantly Fitlon looked brighter and sharper all over the pitch and should have equalized but Ellie Curson shot high over the cross bar. However just after the half hour mark a miss placed pass from centre back Jenny Gray found a Swansea midfield player who took a touch and smashed in a 25 yard shot into the top corner. Filton reacted and faught their way back into the game, chances fell to Daisy Allen, Octavia Saunders and Ellie Curson but all failed to convert. Just before the half time interval a swift counter attack by the Fitlon girls released Hannah Daley down the right hand side, her clever pass inside gave Daisy Allen the space to clip a sublime through ball to striker Annie Martin who made no mistake firing her shot into the roof of the net.

Filton started the second half how they finished the first, first to the ball and with their passing much improved. Ellie Curson seemed to be everywhere winning tackles and starting attack after attack and with Ellie Isaac replacing captain Hannah Churchill, Chloe Tape was moved up into midfield and it was her through pass that allowed Annie Martin to tap in after the Swans keeper missed her clearance. Izzi Howard replaced the impressive Hannah Daley who looked full of confidence following her excellent displays in Portugal for Wales U19 and Filton again started pushing for the goal that would complete the turn around. They didnt have to wait long as in the 54th minute Dasiy Allen released Gina Camfield who crossed first time for Octavia Saunders to finish with a right footed volley. Filton now were confident and continued to press the ball all over the pitch and force their opponents into mistakes. Abby Reynolds replaced the injured Izzi Howard to mark her return to action after a year out and Sarah Doidge also continued her return from long term injury when she replaced Annie Martin who had run herself into the ground. The visitors pushed for an equaliser in the final ten minutes but the Filton back four of Gina Camfield, Ellie Isaac, Jenny Gray and Kirsten Rendall stood strong made sure keeper Yvette Churchill remained un tested.

Filton can be pleased with the way they faught back but will know they cannot afford to start a game as sloppy as they did when their League season starts in September. There were a number of excellent performances in a blue jersey on the day. Keeper Yvette Churchill and full back Gina Camfield showed how far they have come over the last six months with assured displays. Centre back Jenny Gray after an error early in the game recovered fantastically well and was a rock in the middle of the Filton back line in the second half. Annie Martin worked tirelessly and scored two well taken goals but first years Ellie Curson and Chloe Tape stole the show with excellent displays.

Filton's new crop of Academy players suffered defeat in their opening pre season fixture to a strong Plymouth Argyle Ladies side.

After only two weeks of training the Academy girls were still short of their full match fitness but produced a positive performance though were punished for poor defending by an experienced Plymouth outfit. The early stages of the game were even with Filton keeper Abby Evans being forced into two excellent saves and Filton forwards Annie Martin, Robyn Pinder and Ellie Curson guilty of failing to hit the target from good opportunities. Five minutes before the half time interval the visitors did take the lead when Katie Middleton headed in from a corner. Though it was a blow to concede, Katie was a fantastic servant to the club last season and it was great to see her back playing in Bristol.

The second half was again even with Filton enjoying more possession but failing really to test the Plymouth keeper and the visitors continuing to be a major threat on the counter attack. Annie Martin, Emily Allen and Ellie Curson had chances but their attempts didn’t test the visitor’s keeper. Then after a Filton corner Plymouth broke away and after a cross from the right hand side defender Georgia Wallis turned the ball into her own net. Filton responded well but were again caught when they committed too many players to an attack and the visitor’s right winger broke into the penalty area, her scuffed shot looked as though it would be handled easily by the previously excellent Abby Evans but the ball sneaked in under the Filton shot stopper. Credit to the Academy girls they kept fighting and Emily Allen should have reduced to arrears but miscued when left with an open goal in the six yard box. Filton will be disappointed with the defeat but can be pleased with a number of aspects of their performance.

Head Coach Mark Sampson was disappointed to lose the match but positive about a number of aspects of the team’s performance; “We are always disappointed to lose, we don’t lose many games as a college team and it’s important in every fixture we have a strong winning mentality. But for our first run out of the season we can be pleased with a number of individual performances and tactically the areas we have worked on you could see the players have taken things on board. As normal at this stage of pre season it’s about continuing to develop our football fitness and sharpening up in both penalty areas”.

First years Chloe Tape, Ellie Curson, Robyn Pinder, Abby Picton and Molly Doran all made their debuts and will only get stronger with more work on the training pitch and games under their belt. However the young Academy girls will need to quickly learn that at this level not taking your chances and sloppy errors defensively will cost you football matches.

Filton: Evans, Tape (Camfield 45), Saunders, Wallis (Doidge 65), Rendall (Doran 60), D.Allen, Churchill (C), Curson, Pinder, E.Allen, Martin (Picton 55)

After picking up their fourth trophy of the season Filton College Female Football Academy 2009/10 can proudly claim a place in College Academy history as the most successful Female Football squad ever. The college won every competition they entered and have established themselves as the Champion Female Football Academy in the UK.

Speaking after the 5-0 win over Gateshead and winning the English Colleges Champions Trophy for the first time in three years Head Coach of Female Football Mark Sampson was proud of the efforts of everyone involved in their success this season.

"Every single member of this group has played a huge part in our success this season, that is why we have managed to complete this remarkable season because of the group effort. To work with this group of players and all our staff has been an absolute pleasure and they deserve all the plaudits they are getting.

"Our performance today in the circumstances was fantastic, the players produced the type of team performance we could have only dreamt of at the start of the season. They have come so far this season and have rightly established themselves as the best Under 19 team in the UK."

Sharla Passariello (4), Charlotte Jones

When it mattered the most Filton produced their performance of the season to defeat last years Champions Gateshead 5-0 at Bradford City's Coral Windows Stadium.

Filton knew going into the game a win would complete the "perfect season" with the team winning every competition they entered. Preparation was perfect with an overnight stay in a beautiful hotel on the outskirts of Bradford, the players were ready for a big occasion and the chance to make Academy history. When the teams were announced Filton showed the strength of their squad when they made eight changes from the convincing 6-1 semi final win over ECFA League One Champions Huddersfield. Sophie Morgan, Georgia Wallis, Ellie Isaac, Ellis Parsons, Daisy Allen, Jaz Matthews, Sharla Passariello and Gabby Bird all came back into the starting eleven as Filton set up in their usual 4-3-3 formation.

As normal in a big final both teams started a little nervously but both full of commitment and endeavour. Filton it was though who started to assert themselves more on the game and it wasn’t long before they started to create some chances. Georgia Wallis headed wide from a Connie Short corner and Jaz Matthews brought a tidy save from Gateshead's England U19 International keeper Rachel Laws. Sharla Passariello had the games first clear cut chance when after keeper Laws deflected clearance fell to her only for Passariello to volley well over the cross bar. Mid way through the half Filton did get the crucial break through, after some patient build up Paige Stewart switched the play to release full back Ellis Parsons, Parsons looked to have missed placed her pass but Passariello never gave up on the pass and after a mix up between the keeper and defender Passariello nipped in to score. Now a goal to the good Filton kept possession well and made sure they got in at half time still ahead.

Though a goal to the good the Filton girls were still a little disappointed with their first half performance and after a positive talk at half time went out determined in the second half to not only bring the cup home but show everyone their style. Right from the kick off they signalled their intent after winning a throw deep in their opponents half they moved the ball around quickly and several passes later released Jaz Matthews to shoot wide. But the intent was clear and from that moment on the girls produced an outstanding display of passing football, pressing all over the pitch and an incredible togetherness.

Seven minutes into the second period Filton scored a second goal. After a flowing move where the ball was switched from right to left and back into centre back Georgia Wallis, then a combination between Wallis and Daisy Allen allowed Paige Stewart to find some space and when she was released by Wallis, Stewart picked out Captain Connie Short with a defence splitting pass and after another good save from Laws Passariello was on hand to smash in the rebound. The Filton girls were now full of confidence and after a quick free kick from Connie Short, Sophie Morgan teed up Jaz Matthews to deliver a perfect cross to the “unplayable” Passariello to head home her hat trick goal. Just after the goal Charlotte Jones replaced the impressive Gabby Bird and was straight into the game with a crunching challenge to win the ball back in midfield. Filton were now in complete control of the game restricting their opponents to long range attempts that were all handled impeccably by Filton commanding goalkeeper Abby Evans and with centre back Ellie Isaac leading by example in the back four Filton never looked in real danger of conceding the goal that might give Gateshead a lifeline.

With fifteen minutes remaining Pasariello rounded off her best performance in a Filton jersey when she added the teams and her own fourth goal of the game. Another piece of quick thinking from Captain Short gave Paige Stewart time on the edge of the box to deliver a perfect cross for Passariello to power home a header into the bottom corner. With only minutes remaining Daisy Allen picked a pass to free Charlotte Jones who hit a hot into the top corner of the net to round off a fantastic performance and a day that will go down in the history of Filton College Female Football Academy.

After a long season the college have only lost one competitive match and having already won the English Colleges League, English Schools Cup and GFA Womens Challenge Cup one last hurdle remains. Head Coach for Female Football Mark Sampson is looking forward to the challenge of the last game of the season and is urging his players to dig deep for one more big performance.

"Ten months after we first come together as a group our biggest challenge is now just around the corner. Gateshead have a fantastic set up and I know Mel will have her team well prepared for the game on Tuesday. We need to make sure we are ready for one last big effort, to give everything we have one more time and if we can do that I am confident this group of players will write their names in Academy history and become the most successful ever.

"To have won what we have already with such a young squad is a fantastic achievement, we lost pretty much a full squad last season and have brought in a number of first years who have improved beyond all recognition this season and now, every single player in the squad can step in and deliver a high quality performance.

"With college, first team and reserve team games some of the players have played nearly 50 games this season so to maintain their standards right throughout the year has been a big, big effort. But we know we need to make sure we are ready to give everything on the pitch on Tuesday and show everyone one more time our style."

All sessions will be delivered by fully qualified coaches from Bristol Academy, with UEFA qualified coaches acting as assessors to help coaches identify the best players.

The trials are open to all players who wish to attend. However, it is important to stress that the purpose of the Football Association Program for Excellence for Girls is to identify players of outstanding ability and place them in a technical and educational program designed to produce excellence in conjunction with personal development.

Trialists are asked to ensure they wear suitable clothing and footwear, bring plenty of fluids and shin pads. Goalkeepers must have goalkeeping gloves. Trials at WISE will take place on rubber crumb astro turf. To register and make the most of the assessments players are advised to arrive 30 minutes before the start time.

If selected, trialists should be aware that they will be required to commit to training with the Centre of Excellence at Filton College's WISE Campus every Tuesday and Thursday evening:

Under 10's: 5.30pm - 7.00pm (indoor astro)
Under 12's: 6.00pm - 7.30pm (outdoor astro)
Under 14's: 6.00pm - 7.30pm (outdoor astro)
Under 16's: 7.00pm - 8.30pm (indoor astro)

Fixtures against other centres of excellence or training matches within squads will be played every Saturday.

In light of this increased footballing demand on players and the appreciation that they are not only active within school but also other sports, players must regard the centre as their priority and therefore refrain from playing club football. To avoid burnout and overuse injuries the Centre of Excellence staff will be carefully monitoring players to ensure they are not exceeding recommended activity levels.

If you would like to attend the trials, please complete the attached registration form and send to Sophie Dyer (sophie.dyer@filton.ac.uk) before 28th May 2010.

"We wanted to show all our family, friends and supporters who had come to support us our style of football and we were not able to do that so we are disapointed with that, but we also wanted to win and to win a womens cup as a college team is a fantastic achievment so massive credit must go to the players for that.

"In terms of the game we missed far too many chances and we know we need to be much better in those situations in the future, credit to Forest Green they hung in the game and always posed a threat when they attacked. But we had some big performances on the night which dragged us through. The heart of our defence were solid from start to finish, Abby made some big saves at crucial times and Ellie and Georgia were extremely resolute and defended our goal well. But in the middle of the pitch Charlotte Jones and Jaz Matthews were awesome, winning tackles, shots, passses it was a real all action performance from them both.

"We now need to learn from this experience and use it to take us forward, we were too nervous tonight and didnt play with enough freedom or confidence so we will need to make sure we show far more bravery next time we play in a big occasion."

Now with both the English Colleges League, English Schools Cup and Gloucestershire FA Cup already won the college will now prepare for their English Colleges semi final at Gateshead on the 28th April. With only three games to play Filton still have a chance of an unprecedented "perfect" season, winning every competition they competed in and bringing back five trophies.

Filton Win GFA Cup

Filton College Female Football Academy secured their third trophy of the season and their eighth in the last year with a well deserved 2-1 victory over Forest Green Rovers Ladies to pick up the GFA Women's Challenge Cup.

Filton made only one change to their starting eleven from their last Cup Final at Accrington with Sophie Morgan replacing Octavia Saunders at left full back, the only other change meant midfield player Tish Price was added to the bench. Filton did not start the game as well as they did in Accrington with the early stages very scrappy and neither side managing to create any real goal scoring chances. It was clear to see both sets of players were nervous playing infront of a big crowd and Filton found it very difficult to play with their usual fluency on a difficult surface. It was however the college girls who took the lead when winger Gabby Bird converted after some clever link up play between the Filton front three.

With the outstanding midfield duo of Jax Matthews and Charlotte Jones now controlling the play Filton started the second half much brighter and were now creating chances at a regular basis. Strikers, Sharla Passariello, Connie Short and Gabby Bird were all guilty of missing chances with which they should have done better. As Filton pressed, Forest Green began to tire and more chances were afforded to the college girls, Passariello was not having her best night infront of goal and when put through her attempted chip glanced the up right, even centre back Georgia Wallis should have at least hit the target with a free header from inside the six yard box. Even with Filton dominating the play and creating chance after chance their opponents kept their belief and it took a fantastic save from keeper Abby Evans who dived low to her left hand side to keep the college girls a goal to the good. Finally Filton made their dominance count when Passariello who had kept working rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the empty net, much to the relief of her team mates. Again Forest Green fought back and it took another excellent save from keeper Evans and a last ditch tackle from Ellie Isaac to keep their two goal lead intact. As the game drew to an end captain Connie Short had the chance to out some icing on the cake but again her shot went wide of the near post. Forest Green then got the consolation goal their effort had deserved when their right winger calmly lobbed the ball into the Filton net. In keeping with the previous 90 minutes Filton created a great chance again straight from the kick off, a fantastic dribble from Passariello got her into a shooting position but her shot didn't do justice to her fantastic run.

As the final whistle blew players and staff flooded onto the pitch to enjoy the victory and congratulate the girls.
